2022 JulyKaman UH-2 Seasprite

Kaman won a competition for the US Navy’s all-weather plane-guard, search-and-rescue, and light utility helicopter in 1957. Originally designated the HU2K, the configuration — streamlined fuselage, single four-bladed main rotor and tail rotor — was an almost complete departure from Kaman’s synchropter arrangement in order to meet the dash-speed requirement, though rotor control was still accomplished by servo-flaps on the blades. It was also Kaman’s first production helicopter to be powered by a turbine engine — a single General Electric T58 — for a maximum gross weight of 10,000 lb (4,535 kg). The cabin accommodated four passengers or two litters. It first flew on July 2, 1959. The initial production run totaled 190, with the first delivery in 1962. Most of these were subsequently rebuilt to have two T58 engines for higher takeoff weights and improved performance. Of those, 104 were subsequently modified to be SH-2D/Fs for the Light Airborne Multi-Purpose System program, accomplishing anti-submarine and anti-ship missions while operating from US Navy destroyers and frigates. A follow-on order for 48 helicopters also resulted, as well as a contract for the development of the SH-2G powered by two General Electric T700 engines for operation at a gross weight of up to 13,500 lb (6,123 kg). It first flew in 1985; 24 were produced and assigned to US Navy Reserve squadrons. The navies of Australia, Egypt, New Zealand, Peru and Poland have acquired and operated second-hand US Navy and new SH-2Gs.
