Leonardo AW101 Combat Search and Rescue HH-101A (Caesar)
During 2011, the Italian Air Force (Aeronautica Militare Italiana-AMI) determined that it would replace its long serving Agusta/Sikorsky HH-3F fleet with the AW101, a helicopter specifically configured for the Combat Search and Rescue role but also capable of supporting civilian operations such as medical transfer and mass evacuation.
The first of 15 aircraft entered flight test at the Leonardo helicopters site in the UK during 2014, and the first aircraft was delivered in 2015. On Feb. 16, 2016, the AMI formally accepted the first AW101 Type 611 into front line service and designated it the HH-101A.
In keeping with all AW101 variants, the HH-101A is equipped with the powerful General Electric CT7-8E engine and the advanced BERP composite main rotor blade. In combination these features support an increase in maximum takeoff weight to 15.6 metric tons (34,400 lb). It is equipped with the rough field undercarriage and air-to-air refueling facility developed for the combat-proven RAF Merlin HC3.
HH-101A is equipped with advanced avionics supporting IFR all-weather operations. Sensors include high-definition electro-optics, radar, LIDAR obstacle warning and a comprehensive defensive aids suite. Normally operated by five crew, the HH-101A provides a cabin layout with the space for three crew-served weapon stations, emergency medical intervention, stretchers and additional seated personnel.
