Forum 71 is less than three weeks away, but you can still sign up for one of our great Pre-Forum activities! Select from one of two short courses, civil helicopter workshops, or a tour of local US government facilities. But hurry, time is running out! These are key educational activities prior to the start of the 71st Annual Forum and Technology Display in Virginia Beach, Virginia, May 5-7, 2015.
US Government Facility Tours
This Friday, April 17 is the last day for US persons to sign up for the tours of NASA Langley Research Center and Ft. Eustis / US Army Transportation Museum. (Sorry, the deadline for non-US persons has passed.) Go to the Forum tour webpage to sign up or for more information. Space is limited on the tour buses, so act quickly! All tour participants must first be registered for Forum 71. The tour is expected to run from 8 am to 4 pm.
Technical Short Course Offerings
Slots are filling up for two great short courses, taught by world-class experts. Each class runs from 8 am to 4 pm. Registration is $350 per student.
Two workshops are also being offered, with no charge to Forum registrants for attendance. Both workshops will be led by Paul Schaaf, AHS International Advisor for Technology in Regulations.
3rd Annual MAV Student Challenge
Do you know why all these activities end by 4 pm? So you can attend the 3rd Annual Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) Student Challenge!
Come watch 8 universities teams from across the United States compete for $10,000 in prizes! This is an extremely challenging competition created specifically to encourage hands-on engineering and problem solving, as well as to introduce students to the development of autonomous flight control for vertical flight systems. The first two challenges ended with no one able to achieve the autonomous flight objectives – will this be the year when the teams can finally do it?

- Short Course on Rotorcraft Flight Dynamics Model Identification and Flight Control Design using CIFER® and CONDUIT®, presented by Dr. Mark B. Tischler, US Army Aviation Development Directorate. This course will cover practical methods and applications of system identification methods to determine and validate flight dynamics models of rotorcraft from flight test and simulation data. It will also cover practical flight control design and optimization methods to meet modern handling-qualities and flight control specifications. Many flight application examples based on the instructor's broad experience base will be presented throughout the course to demonstrate the methods and results. Full Short Course Description.
- Short Course on the Aerodynamics of Helicopter Accidents, presented by Jack Cress, Vortechs Helicopter Analytics. This course will cover hover performance, transition to forward flight, downwind effects, anti-torque issues, rotor system characteristics (articulated, teetering, bearingless, hybrids), turboshaft engine characteristics, high speed forward flight characteristics, descent phenomenon (VRS, autorotation), dynamic rollover and ground resonance. - Workshop on Cockpit Safety Technology (1:30-2:30 pm): AHS will lead a discussion on cockpit safety technology and its relationship to US federal regulations and the civil aircraft certification process.
- Workshop on Community Noise (2:45-4:00 pm): Discussion will focus on the recent AHS/HAI Fly Neighborly and Noise Abatement initiative.
