Abstract:
The Boeing Company has developed and evaluated several new High Speed Mission Task Elements (MTEs) as part of the National Rotorcraft Technology Center (NRTC) program "Handling Qualities Requirements for Future Configurations and Missions". One of the main goals of this program, which is a collaboration between industry, academia and the U.S. Government, is to update the current Aeronautical Design Standard Performance Specification ADS-33E-PRF to provide the new MTEs that would be required to support Future Vertical Lift (FVL) requirements. Boeing's contribution to the program includes the following MTEs: High Speed Acceleration / Deceleration, High Speed Steep Descent, and High Speed Break Turn. These MTEs were primarily evaluated with Boeing and Army pilots using a high-fidelity simulation of a tiltrotor configuration based on the production MV-22B. The maneuvers evaluated were found to be effective at determining handing qualities in these regimes, at least for the tiltrotor configuration.
